What is a certified supervisor?

Under the Education and Care Services National Law and National Regulations, a certified supervisor is a person with specific early childhood education and care qualifications who leads an education and care service. The role carries legal responsibility for ensuring the service operates in line with regulatory standards, including child safety, educational programming, and staff management.

The certified supervisor must hold or be working toward qualifications recognised by the regulator, typically a diploma or bachelor degree in early childhood education. On the Gold Coast, this person oversees daily operations at the service, manages communication with families, ensures adequate staffing levels, and maintains records required under the National Law.

Key responsibilities include implementing child safety policies, supervising educators, planning educational programs aligned with learning frameworks, and ensuring the service meets standards for health and hygiene, indoor and outdoor environments, and safe storage of hazardous materials. The supervisor is also accountable for addressing complaints, managing incident reports, and ensuring staff professional development.

This role differs from a centre manager or coordinator in that the certified supervisor carries specific legal obligations and must be physically present during operating hours unless temporary relief supervision arrangements have been approved. The position is foundational to service quality and regulatory compliance across Gold Coast child care facilities.
