How we score child care centres on Gold Coast Child Care Guide

Gold Coast Child Care Guide currently scores 145 child care agency businesses across the region. Every score comes from a fixed rubric applied the same way to every listing. This page explains what goes into that rubric, why we weight it the way we do, and where the method runs into honest limits.

The five signals, heaviest first

Each business gets a composite score out of 100, built from five measured signals:

  • Sentiment, 28%: a synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, praise and complaints alike, not just whether they're positive or negative but what themes keep coming up.
  • Rating, 26%: the aggregate star rating as it appears on Google.
  • Volume, 20%: how many reviews a business has, log-scaled so that jumping from 5 reviews to 50 matters a lot more than jumping from 500 to 550. A handful of reviews should never carry the same weight as hundreds.
  • Recency, 13%: how recently families have actually left reviews. A center that was well reviewed five years ago and has gone quiet since tells you less than one with a steady, recent flow.
  • Completeness, 13%: whether basic listing details are actually present, phone number, website, operating hours, and address, since a business that's hard to reach or verify is a worse experience before a parent ever walks in the door.

Why sentiment carries the most weight

A star average is a single number, and single numbers hide patterns. Two child care agencies can sit at the exact same 4.3 stars while one has a spread of unrelated minor gripes and the other has a repeated, specific complaint, say, about staff turnover, late pickups not being communicated, or billing surprises. You cannot tell those two situations apart from the star rating alone. Reading what recent reviews actually describe is the only way to catch that difference, which is why sentiment is weighted above the raw rating itself.

Why the other signals matter for this decision

Choosing care for a child is a higher-stakes decision than picking a cafe, so the supporting signals are chosen with that in mind. Rating still matters because it's the aggregate judgment of everyone who has walked through the door. Volume matters because a rating built on 5 reviews is far shakier than one built on 200, and log-scaling keeps a small cluster of reviews from being mistaken for a strong track record. Recency matters because staffing, management, and quality at a child care center can shift within a year or two, and a review from 2019 doesn't tell you much about today. Completeness matters because a parent trying to shortlist agencies needs working contact details, current hours, and an address that checks out, and listings that skip these basics create friction at exactly the moment families need clear answers.

The honest limits

We synthesise themes from reviews rather than republishing them word for word, and we link out to Google so you can read the original source yourself and form your own judgment. Businesses with few recent reviews produce a shakier signal no matter how the math is arranged, so those get a low-confidence label rather than being presented with false certainty. Scores are earned strictly from this rubric and the underlying data. They are never hand-edited. Where paid placement exists anywhere on this site, it is always labelled as such and it never changes a score. If any list's picks or order were reviewed or adjusted by an editor rather than generated purely from the rubric, that is disclosed directly on the page, such as our best long day care list.

Who's behind this

Gold Coast Child Care Guide is published by Scout Local Media, an independent Australian publisher that builds practical local guides and directories to help people find businesses worth trusting. Scout Local Media has run this and other directories since 2026, with the aim of making it easier for consumers to make informed choices and giving quality local businesses a fair way to be found. You can see more of that work at scoutlocalmedia.com.au, or reach the publisher directly at hello@scoutlocalmedia.com.au.

Editorial oversight of these rankings sits with Marcus Beck, Editor in Chief. Data behind every listing is refreshed monthly, and each individual listing carries a "last verified" stamp so you can see it's being actively maintained rather than left to go stale. FAQ

Can a child care agency pay to improve its score?
No. Paid placement, where it exists on this site, is always labelled clearly and has no effect on a business's score. Scores come only from the weighted rubric applied to measured data.
Why does a business have a low-confidence label?
It means the business has too few recent reviews for the score to be statistically reliable. We still calculate a score using the same rubric, but we flag it so readers know to treat it with more caution.
Do you show the actual review text?
We synthesise recurring themes and patterns from recent reviews rather than republishing them directly, and we link out to Google so you can read the original reviews yourself.
How often is the data updated?
The full dataset is refreshed monthly, and each listing shows a last verified stamp so you can see when it was last checked.
