What is a nominated supervisor?

In a child care service on the Gold Coast, the nominated supervisor holds direct responsibility for operational compliance and management decisions separate from the approved provider. While the approved provider holds overall legal accountability for the service, the nominated supervisor is the staff member or manager named to oversee what happens in practice, day to day.

The role carries specific duties under Queensland child care regulations. A nominated supervisor must ensure staff are properly trained, supervise children according to required ratios, maintain incident and injury records, respond to concerns or complaints, and manage documentation. They also coordinate with parents, report serious incidents to the regulator where required, and ensure the service follows its own policies on health, safety, and quality.

The nominated supervisor differs from the approved provider in that they work on site or are clearly designated to run the service operationally, while the approved provider may be a business owner or organisation overseeing multiple sites or holding the financial responsibility. The nominated supervisor cannot simply be the provider; they must be a separate, identified person (typically an educational leader, director, or manager) accountable for what staff do and how the service runs from day to day. This separation ensures clarity about who makes decisions, who is answerable for breaches, and who parents and regulators contact about immediate matters at the service.
